Let's explore how competition can bring meaning to gaming
For decades, gaming was synonymous with massive, blockbuster titles created by industry giants like Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard, and Ubisoft. These companies defined eras, delivering legendary franchises like Mass Effect, Call of Duty, and Assassin’s Creed. Their polish, budgets, and marketing campaigns made AAA games feel like the pinnacle of gaming.
But in recent years, a growing dissatisfaction has taken root in the gaming community. Players who once eagerly awaited the latest release from these studios are now turning their attention elsewhere. The reason is a shift in sentiment that has been growing within players for quite some time, which speaks truth about the industry, and it is the truth not many people welcome - the big studios, once celebrated for their creativity, have become corporate machines focused on profits, trends, and monetization schemes at the expense of providing genuine experiences.
This disillusionment has opened the door for a surge in indie and smaller-studio games, titles that prioritize storytelling, fun, and player engagement over flashy graphics and predatory microtransactions. However, one niche still remains conspicuously underserved - competitive games that deliver meaningful, skill-based contests, and this is exactly where web3 gaming can shine.
AAA games once stood as monuments to what gaming could achieve, blending artistry, technology, and storytelling into unforgettable experiences. But as the gaming industry expanded into a multi-billion-dollar juggernaut, many major studios became entangled in practices that alienated their audiences and made them somewhat stiff, predictable, and above all, mediocre.
The most obvious culprit is the proliferation of monetization practices on every level. Loot boxes, battle passes, and microtransactions have become the standard in many AAA games which some years ago would seem as pure heresy. Titles like FIFA and Call of Duty not only sell for $70 upfront but also pressure players to spend on cosmetic items, season passes, and in-game currencies. These systems often prioritize financial gain over fair play, creating a sense that not only success but also the sense of enjoyment from the title is tied to the depth of one’s wallet rather than skill or effort.
Another criticism is the relentless trend-chasing which often results in creating a game within a trend that no longer catches the attention. In the pursuit of broad appeal, many AAA studios have homogenized their offerings, shoehorning popular mechanics such as open-world exploration, crafting systems, or multiplayer modes into games where they don’t belong. Players have expressed fatigue over this “one-size-fits-all” approach, longing for innovation and focus, and we can clearly see it based not only on the sentiment, but also when looking at the numbers of particular game copies sold.
The corporate structures of AAA studios often stifle creativity, favoring sequels and established franchises over original ideas since these are seen as “safe investments”. Risk-averse publishers prefer to greenlight projects that guarantee revenue, leading to an industry saturated with reboots, remakes, and formulaic gameplay loops which players grew tired of.
For many players, these trends have stripped AAA games of the soul that once made them so compelling. The result? A shift in focus toward smaller studios and indie developers which can now fight for the steadily growing number of users.
As dissatisfaction with AAA studios grows, players are increasingly seeking out indie games and smaller-scale projects that emphasize creativity, passion, and meaningful engagement, offering experiences that many thought will never return.
Indie games thrive on authenticity - it’s more important than most may think. Without the pressure of corporate shareholders or sprawling development teams, smaller studios can take risks and experiment with unique mechanics and storytelling without worries that it would not be approved by “higher-ups”. Titles like Hollow Knight, Celeste, and Stardew Valley have captivated players with their heartfelt narratives, innovative gameplay, and charm, forming devoted communities that not only play, but also expand the game universe all the time. All it takes is to see how vibrant Hollow Knight or Undertale communities are.
For players, these games feel very personal as these are crafted by teams who genuinely love the medium, rather than committees focused on profit margins and it doesn’t take much to feel the difference. Indie developers often communicate directly with their audiences via various platforms of social media, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect even before the game is released.
Games like Hades and Disco Elysium have proven that storytelling is still a vital part of gaming. These titles eschew massive budgets in favor of rich, character-driven narratives that leave a lasting impression and while these two games are vastly different in terms of the genre, both tell a captivating story and offer unique experiences fueling new video-essays on YouTube. For players tired of endless fetch quests and bloated open worlds, indie games offer a refreshing return to meaningful experiences.
Many indie games embrace simplicity, focusing on mechanics that are easy to learn but difficult to master. This approach mirrors classic gaming, where the joy lay in gameplay itself rather than graphical fidelity or sprawling maps. Untitled Goose Game and Vampire Survivors showcase how simplicity can be a strength, delivering unadulterated fun that keeps players coming back. Not to mention that Vampire Survivors was so successful in its simplicity it created a whole new genre of games with numerous copies being made and many of them still being in the process of creation when I write this article.
However, while indie games have filled a void left by AAA studios, one niche remains underdeveloped - skill-based competitive games. Competitive gaming, particularly in genres like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and battle royales, is still dominated by major studios for a number of reasons. Titles like League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Fortnite remain the gold standard, but they are plagued by many of the same issues that frustrate players about AAA games - pay-to-win mechanics, balancing controversies, and exploitative monetization.
What the industry lacks is a wave of competitive games that prioritize skill, fairness, and pure competition, games where victory is determined solely by mastery, not by who spends the most money on in-game advantages. Guess what gaming niche can fix this…
Web3 gaming, driven by blockchain technology, could be the game-changer that fills this niche. By decentralizing control and introducing mechanisms for skill-based competition, web3 gaming has the potential to disrupt the dominance of AAA studios and finally bring meaningful competition to the forefront.
One of the most compelling innovations in web3 gaming is the zero-sum model, introduced by protocols like Elympics. In this system, players compete in games where they stake real money on their skills in the form of mutual bets. Each match is a contest of ability, with the winner taking home the entire pot. This concept mirrors games like chess, where success is determined purely by strategy and mastery, not external factors like paid upgrades or randomized loot that can affect the final result.
Even more, blockchain technology enables players to truly own their in-game assets and verify the results, adding another layer of fairness and transparency. Smart contracts and decentralized ledgers ensure that rewards are distributed automatically and securely, without interference from developers or publishers. This way every party can be sure no one has the ability to cheat, steal funds, or withdraw before the results are settled.
Web3 gaming’s success hinges on more than just mechanics; it requires a cultural shift in how players perceive and engage with these games. Social media will play a key role in this transformation with platforms like TikTok and YouTube that can showcase the excitement of web3 gaming, emphasizing its skill-based nature and competitive edge.
Influencers could host high-stakes matches, demonstrating how games powered by Elympics allow players to turn $1 bets into significant winnings through pure ability. These viral moments would not only attract traditional gamers but also demystify web3 gaming for skeptics, reframing it as an evolution of the medium rather than a passing trend.

As dissatisfaction with AAA studios continues to grow and indie games gain prominence, the gaming landscape already feels the echoes of disruption. Web3 gaming, with its emphasis on fairness, skill, and meaningful competition, could become the next great frontier where millions of players will find the best competitive gaming experience possible.
By addressing the shortcomings of both AAA and indie games, web3 gaming has the potential to unite players under a new paradigm, one where the thrill of victory comes not from flashy graphics or expensive upgrades but from the satisfaction of hard-earned mastery. What a change it would be to those who value competition and skill mastery over spending money on in-game cosmetics.
For developers and players alike, this represents an opportunity to rediscover what makes gaming truly great: the joy of fair play, the thrill of competition, and the simple yet profound satisfaction of meaningful engagement.
