The Global Gaming Report 2024 shows that web3 gaming is moving into a new era, leaving behind earlier issues like speculation-driven gameplay and misaligned incentives. A key element in this shift is the seamless integration of social platforms such as Telegram, which is driving web3 gaming adoption. According to recent research conducted by Elympics, social platforms and mobile apps are becoming the primary gateways for new players with answers from 54% of respondents that reported playing through social platforms is their preferred choice, while another 16% use mobile apps.
The convergence of competitive gaming and mobile-first experiences has reshaped the gaming landscape, as highlighted by industry leaders such as Yat Siu (Animoca Brands), Sebastien Borget (Sandbox), and Inal Kardan (TON Ventures). Their insights underscore how the accessibility provided by social and mobile platforms, particularly through Telegram’s growing presence in blockchain gaming, is key to engaging new audiences. This trend highlights the importance of easy access and user-friendly interfaces in bringing more players into web3 gaming.
Blockchain gaming is emerging as the solution to many of the industry's challenges, especially through the introduction of "compete-to-earn" models. In fact, 65% of surveyed players indicated that the competitive mechanics of blockchain games are what make them most enjoyable. Furthermore, the monetization opportunities presented by blockchain have garnered substantial interest, with 42% of respondents identifying the potential to earn money as their main motivation for playing.
Elympics’ COO, Tom Kopera, further emphasized this shift during the DoubleXP Gaming Night at Token 2049 in Singapore. He pointed out that despite previous hurdles in web3 game onboarding, the rise of community-driven, skill-based games that integrate competition and financial rewards is setting the stage for mass adoption. This is reflected in the fact that 79% of respondents reported playing games daily, highlighting a strong commitment to competitive gaming.
Web3 gaming is not only reshaping how games are monetized but also how competition is structured. The future will be driven by skill-based, zero-sum game economies, where players’ success is measured purely by their abilities, not financial investment. This is a marked departure from early blockchain games that relied on pay-to-win models, which often alienated genuine players. The ability to monetize skills rather than financial speculation has already shown promise, with platforms like Elympics demonstrating how players and developers alike can benefit from a shared incentive structure.
In this new paradigm, where financial rewards are directly tied to skill, blockchain technology acts as the foundational layer ensuring fair play. Sebastien Borget, President of the Blockchain Game Alliance, noted that this model allows developers to create ecosystems where every player’s contribution is valued.
Platforms like Telegram are at the forefront of this shift, with 53.56% of respondents reporting it as their preferred platform for playing mobile games. This highlights the platform’s growing influence in onboarding players into web3 environments. With initiatives like TON and viral games like Notcoin and Hamster Kombat, Telegram has positioned itself as a key player in the web3 gaming ecosystem. In just a few months, Notcoin attracted over 40 million users, and Hamster Kombat now boasts over 200 million registered users.
Despite the rapid growth, challenges remain. For those who have yet to adopt web3 gaming, the complexity of using crypto wallets (cited by 11% of respondents) remains a significant barrier. However, advancements in wallet integration and simplified onboarding processes, such as those provided by TON’s infrastructure, are expected to lower these barriers, creating a more inclusive gaming environment.
Additionally, the report highlights a strong willingness from players to invest in their gaming experiences. 50% of respondents have paid for subscriptions or gameplay, while 31% have invested in NFTs, showing a growing appetite for digital ownership and blockchain-based gaming assets.
As web3 gaming continues to evolve, inclusivity and ease of access will be key drivers of its success. With platforms like Telegram leading the way in making blockchain gaming seamless, and research showing that 32.11% of respondents simply "don't know how to start," the importance of user-friendly onboarding cannot be overstated. The integration of social and mobile platforms into mainstream web3 gaming will blur the lines between traditional and blockchain-based games, creating a unified experience that resonates with gamers globally.
